10-20-2006 - Hellboy 2 Nearly GreenLighted
SciFi Wire has quoted Guillermo as saying that Hellboy 2 is "officially a go", but he says the studio is just waiting for proof that the movie can be put together for the slated budget. ""It's a pretty low number for the size of movie we want to do. Adjusted for inflation, it's as low a budget as the first one, but the scale of it is about twice the first one," says GDT.
Also of note, GDT talks briefly about the theme:
"The heart of the film is that fantasy has been grounded by reality," del Toro said. "It's been ground to dust by reality. Hellboy is fighting for the humans, but he starts realizing that maybe not everything is right in the way that he does things."
10-18-2006 - GDT Talks Hellboy 3
GDT says in an interview with IGN that he is hopeful there might be a Hellboy 3:
"I've talked to [Hellboy creator Mike] Mignola about the third one. He seemed to like [my idea], and that is that the way the love story would pay off in the third movie would be completely unexpected," hints del Toro. "I knew what I wanted to do on the first one, but I had no idea if we ever would get to do a second one. And now that we are I really am laying down the breadcrumbs that will lead you to a very, very ・hopefully ・powerful denouement of that loving couple."
GDT tells IGN that Hellboy 2 is in preproduction and Francisco Ruiz Velasco, Wayne Barlow, Ty Ellingson, and Mike Mignola are designing creatures right now. The movie is being budgeted in London and Budapest and GDT hopes to start shooting next year.
In another interview, GDT told IGN that he has been very pleased working with Universal for H2, and has been fantasizing about Hellboy someday combatting the Universal monsters.
"I would love to [go with the classic versions], I would love to," laughs the director, who says that Frankenstein and the Creature from the Black Lagoon are his favorites. "[Hellboy creator Mike] Mignola, when we closed the deal with Universal, we both looked at each other and just said, 'Frankenstein!'"
